Oriental Door Knob, Beijing

As a symbol of auspicious and majesty, most doors in Temple of Heaven have brass lion-head door knob plated with gold. All the doors used by emperor had 9 studs arranged horizontally and vertically as number 9 represented supremacy of the monarch. Other lower rank like princes and baron had fewer studs on their gates with 7 x7 or 5 x 5 arrangement.
